Wilfred Peisley (1916- )
Coffs Harbour n.d.
oil on canvas
40.6 x 50.8 cm
Gift of Howard Hinton 1944

Born 1916, Bathurst, NSW.

Wilfred John Peisley studied at East Sydney Technical College and in 1943 won the NSW Government Travelling Scholarship (for landscape). In 1945 he went to New York to study at the art school at Yale University with Professor Theodor Sizer. He married in New York and subsequently taught art at American schools, including the University of New York, and became a well-known portrait painter.

He was a frequent finalist in the Wynne Prize for landscape painting and is represented in the collection of the Art Gallery of NSW. This beach scene is very painterly, with a thick texture. The sky and clouds dominate half the image. The long wooden Coffs Harbour jetty follows the horizon line and is still recognisable to viewers today. The figures on the beach are rendered in just a few quick brushtrokes. The Hinton Collection holds three works by Peisley.
